Photographers Coppi Barbieri are experts at shooting luxury goods but two of their recent commissions moved into a more unpredictable area when they decided to include live animals into their photography. Choosing to include these unique creatures accentuates the luxurious textures of each product. The snake is the inspiration for the scale like texture on the Nike trainers and crocodile skin for the Piper champagne casing. Both Captured and retouched to create the rich style that is consistent with any Coppi Barbieri Image.

We helped produce these images using a combination of cgi and retouching. Working with creative agency KLP we followed their visuals to create a cgi model of the ice shards and 2 different style Pepsi bottles. These elements were then combined into landscape posters.

Tapestry were delighted to work with GBH Design on the new Mar Mostro (Monster of the Sea) 70 foot yacht which will be racing in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12. The boat displays a giant octopus grasping the hull and deck with an enormous Puma emerging from the waves (dubbed the Aqua Cat).

Mark Bonner, creative director at GBH explains,
“We wanted to create a livery that represents the non-stop battle between the team and the elements, but to do that in a fun way,”

“Back in 2008, for Puma’s boat Il Mostro (The Monster), we designed the boat as if it was a giant shoe in the water,” he continues. “This time, its been very much the other way round. Every element of the livery’s design is made up from either the monster’s red tentacles or with illustrated waves of water. Our aim was to create an interplay that really comes alive in photography when the boat’s design connects with the real waterline of the sea, especially at high speed.”

Tapestry set about creating the Aqua cat first. Using cgi to create a wire frame model allowed us to bring to life a 2d brand logo into a solid 3d form. We could vary the turbulence of the water to create a sleek flowing cat rising from the waves and by also changing the light setup we could define the shape in a very graphic way.

The Aqua Cat was then illustrated further with a continuous waterline which spanned the length of the boat. The graphic waves and spray were created in photoshop and merged with the cgi renders. The tentacle formstrip that emerges from the waves was also created in cgi and manipulated to exactly resemble the iconic puma stripe that adorns their classic footwear. Great care was taken to precisely position the tentacles and suckers so that they made a perfect shape that not only wrapped up over the hull but also curled over onto the top deck and twisted around the cabin, pulleys and other equipment. A base tentacle mesh was created which was rigged to follow a simple spline which could be bent and twisted to any shape with the added ability to increase or reduce the thickness of the arm. Additional graphics and icons were also created using photoshop which were used throughout the boat.

To enable us to wrap the boat and position the graphics with precision, Puma supplied us with CAD files of the boat shell which we UV mapped and used as our virtual reality guide. It was from this 3d file that we were able to create a full unwrapped artwork image. This image was used create a virtual representation in the form of a Quicktime VR which could be spun and viewed from any angle. This gave everyone involved a very clear idea of how the boat would look and enabled any alterations to be made before the final production.

The final procedure of how to put the graphics onto the boat threw up it’s own set of problems.

The medium in which the livery was applied had to be considered very carefully.

“Weight is crucially important, so it was decided very early on that the less the livery weighed, the better. In the end, after testing two panels, it was decided that the carbon fibre boat would be painted by hand rather than apply vinyl graphics. This turned out to be a massively intense process, it took 600 hours to airbrush paint the livery onto the hull.” explains Mark Bonner.

For the start of the 2011 Formula 1 season Tapestry had great pleasure in working with RedBull and Realise Creative once again to create the new race team images. The drivers and car were photographed by David Clerihew who shot a multitude of various poses and angles to make up a library of shots. The shots were then used in various compositions to produce a series of images that were used across a variety of printed material.

The Redbull drivers, Webber and Vettel, were retouched and composed together to form a montage which could be adapted and altered to fit various formats. The cars were retouched and branded specific to each driver. The background graphic was created by our retouchers as a base for all the elements to be placed onto. The results enabled us to produce multiple versions of the images for different sizes and proportions to cater for any print.

In addition to the Library Building apartments, Cathedral is also building a Leisure Centre and Library for Clapham Council. To promote the new community services that will be on offer in the development, Realise Creative designed this life-size hoarding to show the community spirit and future for the area.

The project began with supplied CAD data which was converted and setup for an actual life size rendition. The image was populated with real local people from the Clapham area who were photographed by our photographic department in Tapestry’s new Farringdon studio. CGI and photography were combined making sure that camera data was matched between the two processes to ensure that each shot blended perfectly into the 3d environment. The 3d model was then rendered with textures and lighting so the photographic elements could be retouched in.

A stunning new hoarding taking shape on Clapham High Street currently shows a more stylish and cool approach to building hoardings than you might usually expect. Shot by David Clerihew and retouched by Adele Hodges @ Tapestry the image involved a huge amount of composing and blending to create a vast sweeping image that wraps around the site.

Natalie Perkins from Realise Creative explains:
“As part of our, “The old is over. The new is unstoppable” campaign for Cathedral’s development on Clapham High Street, we created this powerful 28×5 metre hoarding. The new apartments in the Library Building development are modern and cutting edge; a far cry from the typical period conversions of Clapham. Our campaign shows that living in somewhere new is cool, and more exciting than living in a converted Victorian flat like everyone else.”

Realise Creative and the Cathedral Group asked us to create a series of images that merged elements of cgi and real life photography together. Each photograph was mapped and a virtual environment built to replicate the scene which enabled us to place the cgi elements into position and render out realistic lighting effects and illumination that would match the physical surroundings.

“As an independent and innovative property development and investment company, Cathedral Group have become pioneers of Public Private Partnership; developing vibrant mixed-use, exciting schemes throughout the UK. To illustrate their dynamic work in this field, we created a series of images of current projects; revealing the potential, possibilities and beauty of what are seen by many as derelict, run-down and ugly buildings.”

How do you convey the hydrating qualities of Acuvue® OASYS® contact lenses. That was the problem faced by McCann Healthcare who came up with the creative solution of immersing the whole person under water to show how comfortable and rejuvenating wearing them feels. The ads worked by placing a man and woman in a setting where the eyes would normally be under strain, reading and working at a computer, but where the properties of the product gave exceptional comfort and hydrating effects for the eyes.

To get the best results underwater photographer Zena Holloway was asked to shoot the images for this complicated setup. She is an exceptional photographer in this field and seemed the obvious choice due to her expertise and experience. The photographic shoot was held at the Action Underwater Studios in Basildon, Essex, a full capability studio with complete underwater photography facilities.

After the underwater scenes were finished, interior shots were taken and made ready for each version of the ad. Our skilled retouchers then took over to composite the various shots together to build up the final compositions.

Following on from previous successful ads the plucky group of dogs led by Pippin (the getaway driver) engage in a spot of canine robbery. In this ad from Agency DDB London our intrepid crew raid the Bakers warehouse and make off with the delivery of Meaty Meals. The shot was compiled from a variety of shots all taken on location by photographer Nick Meek. Each element has been carefully assembled and retouched to set the mood and convey the story of the warehouse heist.
